Southwest Riverside County Chapter of CAMFT invites you to join us for the most amazing mandated Suicide Prevention Workshop in Southern California where you can learn, eat, and enjoy yourself with us in Temecula’s beautiful wine county!  The training will be provided by Ronald Mah, MA, PhD, a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, consultant, trainer and author.

Course Description:

Clients of any age often are existentially alone- sometimes suffering unbearably, although they may be surrounded by others in couples, families, and communities: school, church, work, and more… and with a caring compassionate therapist. This training is based on the premise that clinicians usually already hold an expansive repertoire of theoretical wisdom that they may not consciously draw upon in therapy. As such, the trainer will prompt participants to identify and utilize- translate the theoretical wisdom they hold conceptually for practical therapeutic interventions and strategies to meet client needs for self-esteem, identity, connection, relationships, and meaning. And to help them manage and distinguish among stress, distress, to desperation- hope and hopelessness that can lead to “the blues”- that is transitional upset, dysthymia, chronic depression to suicidal thoughts and actions.

The training starts with a simple question of "Why do you pick up a baby who's crying?" along with identification of key client populations and common presenting issues. These will be referenced throughout the training for therapists to gain insight and direction for their work. Attachment styles and theories, key life learnings, core communications from relationships, rules of developmental theories, life stage theory, personality disorders, and cross-cultural models (including male and female, individualistic and communal) will be the beginning references to prompt for three practical implications for therapy and therapists.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify four key things that people need to learn in order to have healthy functioning.
  • Participants will be able to the four parts of self-esteem that can underlie vulnerability vs. tolerance of loneliness.
  • Participants will be able to the three skills babies, children, and adults learn from healthy attachment relationships.
  • Participants will be able to identify how major personality disorders create loneliness.
