Southwest Riverside County Chapter of CAMFT invites you to join us for the most amazing mandated Law and Ethics Workshop in person in Southern California where you can learn, eat, and enjoy yourself with us in Temecula’s beautiful wine county!

Presenter:  Kristin Roscoe, Esq. is a CAMFT Staff Attorney who takes CAMFT members phone calls regarding law and ethics issues and contributes articles on those subjects to the Therapist. Before joining CAMFT’s legal team, Kristin represented healthcare professionals in medical malpractice litigation at La Follette, Johnson, DeHaas, Fesler & Ames. Since entering the legal profession, Kristin has worked in various capacities, presenting to and advocating on behalf of her clients both in and outside of the courtroom. Kristin received her B.A. from The College of Wooster in 2006 and graduated from The American University Washington College of Law with her J.D. in 2012.

Course Description:
In this six-hour in-person presentation, CAMFT Staff Attorney Kristin Roscoe will guide attendees through the nuances of navigating dual relationships with current and former patients. The presentation will begin with a brief update on recent legal changes impacting MFTs. We will then focus on an in-depth examination of dual relationships with patients. Not all dual relationships are unethical. The unethical ones are generally easy to identify, but the rest require exploring the nuances of the grey. From navigating the realities of encountering patients in your "real" life, attending patients' weddings and graduations, writing letters, offering coaching services to a patient, and court involvement, we will spend the day examining and analyzing vignettes to better equip attendees to apply CAMFT's Code of Ethics and California law to these complex issues.

Educational Goals:

Enhance participants' knowledge and application of California legal requirements, CAMFT’s ethical standards, and professional decision-making principles related to dual relationships and boundary management in marriage and family therapy practice.

Measurable Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Identify the legal and ethical standards governing dual relationships with current and former patients under California law and the CAMFT Code of Ethics.

• Distinguish among prohibited, potentially problematic, and ethically permissible dual relationships through analysis of common clinical scenarios involving social, professional, and community interactions with current and former patients.

• Apply ethical decision-making frameworks to evaluate risks, benefits, power differentials, and potential harm when considering boundary crossings and dual relationships.

• Assess the legal and ethical implications of specific scenarios, such as attending patient life events, preparing letters and documentation, providing non-clinical services, participating in court-related matters, and interacting with patients within shared communities.

• Formulate strategies for managing, documenting, and communicating boundary-related decisions to reduce liability exposure and support clinical practice.
