Course Description: From Surviving to Thriving: Therapeutic Approaches for Narcissistic Abuse Recovery

This training offers a comprehensive, trauma-informed framework for working with individuals recovering from narcissistic abuse, with a focus on moving clients beyond survival- based coping into sustainable healing and post-traumatic growth. Participants will explore the nuanced presentation of narcissistic abuse, including gaslighting, coercive control, trauma bonding, and identity erosion, as well as the complex clinical presentations that often accompany these experiences (e.g., anxiety, depression, complex trauma responses, and difficulties with trust, boundaries, and self-concept). This training will also address common misdiagnoses and differential considerations, supporting clinicians in accurately conceptualizing and treating survivors within a relational and systemic context.

Clinicians will be introduced to practical, evidence-informed interventions to support clients in rebuilding reality testing, strengthening boundaries, and restoring a cohesive sense of self. The training integrates psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, parts work, and attachment- focused approaches, along with structured tools and frameworks that can be immediately applied in clinical practice. Special attention will be given to therapeutic challenges, including resistance, shame, trauma reenactment, and the therapist’s role in maintaining a grounded, non-collusive stance when clients are still embedded in or returning to abusive dynamics.

This training is appropriate for licensed therapists and associates seeking to deepen their clinical competence in working with narcissistic abuse recovery. The content is designed at an intermediate level; participants are expected to have a foundational understanding of trauma-informed care, attachment theory, and basic clinical interventions. No prior specialization in narcissistic abuse is required, though familiarity with personality disorders and trauma frameworks will enhance integration of the material. Attendees will leave with practical tools, enhanced case conceptualization skills, and increased confidence in guiding clients from surviving toward thriving.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify at least three core dynamics of narcissistic abuse, including gaslighting, trauma bonding, and coercive control.

2. Differentiate narcissistic abuse presentations from other clinical diagnoses (e.g., PTSD, BPD, depression, anxiety) to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning.

3. Describe at least two trauma-informed interventions to support clients in rebuilding reality testing and self-trust.

4 . Apply at least two clinical strategies to support boundary development and reduce trauma reenactment patterns in clients.
